Dear Local2Me Community Member, You’ve probably heard the Local2Me Service was acquired by Smalltown, a Bay Area network of hyper-local community websites where anyone can post, discover and share everything about their town. This note is to let you know that you are now registered on www.smalltown.com as well as Local2Me, and we encourage you to check out the Smalltown site nearest you. We will not be making any significant changes to the Local2Me service for many months, and before we do, we’ll be asking folks in the Local2Me community for their input and advice. I've lived on the Peninsula for over 30 years, and I've been a Local2Me member since I met Michael at Excite. Please read the Q&A below and let me know if you have any additional questions. I'd also love to hear your thoughts regarding what makes for a vibrant online community like Local2Me. Watch a video about Smalltown here: http://www.smalltown.com/theater_smalltown.html Best Regards, Hal Rucker Founder | CEO Smalltown, Inc hrucker@smalltown.com What is Smalltown? Smalltown is a great place to find a piano teacher, look up what's happening nearby or ask your neighbors a question. Anyone can post on Smalltown using a Webcard™ Posting, which is like a traditional listing plus some great additional features. Webcards can be used to post a business listing, a classified, a local event or even a personal profile. The best thing about Webcards is they can be attached to any other Webcard. Why is that important? Here's an example. Let's say I'm planning a birthday party for my daughter and I need to find a good bakery for a birthday cake. I can post a Webcard in the Smalltown "Discussions" area and ask my neighbors "Can anyone recommend a good bakery for birthday cakes for kids?" When a neighbor responds, he or she can say something like "On a friend's advice, we tried Sibby's Cupcakes instead of one big cake, and the kids loved them. I'll attach Sibby's Webcard and you can read all about her bakery, including how to place an order." Click here to see Sibby's Webcard: http://www.smalltown.com/sanmateo/sibby How is Smalltown different than Local2Me? Local2Me is an online community where the users post information. This is known as user generated content. Smalltown has user generated content as well in areas where people can review a local business, ask neighbors a question, or post some information about local happenings. In addition, though, Smalltown has content contributed by local businesses. Our goal is to supply the online tools that small businesses need to create their own deep, rich content in the form of text, photos, videos, coupons, newsletters and calendars. The magic of Smalltown happens when user generated content is seamlessly integrated with merchant generated content. In essence, we’re building a two way conversation between businesses and neighbors, with the hope it will improve local economies and the quality of life within small communities. How does my Smalltown registration work? If you were already registered at Smalltown, nothing will change. If we automatically registered you, we used the same email address and password you use to sign in at Local2Me. All Smalltown users have a screen name. We've assigned you an arbitrary screen name which is easy to change. To change your screen name to something you like more, sign in at Smalltown and click on the "my account" link. Also note that, similar to Local2me, we send out a Daily Digest of new content posted the day before. This email includes valuable coupons and special offers from local merchants. Click here to see an example of the Smalltown Daily Digest: http://www.smalltown.com/sanmateo/html/dailydigest If you would like to register to receive the Smalltown Daily Digest, go to your account settings - the same place you visit to change your screen name. Keep in mind you can always unsubscribe. Why did Smalltown acquire Local2Me? The Local2Me community already “gets it”. You understand how valuable it is to be able to tap into the deep local knowledge all your neighbors share. We want to showcase Local2Me as an example of an online community that works; the intent is to inspire new communities just getting started. What will happen to the current Local2Me service? The Smalltown "Discussions" tab is similar to Local2Me, but we know it can be much better. Soon we’ll be redesigning how our online discussions work, and asking for your advice. Based on your feedback, we’ll improve how our users share their knowledge and ask you to migrate to that service. Beyond that, we don’t know our plans for Local2Me. What do you think? What will happen with current Local2Me advertisers? We will continue to run the current ads for a while, with the hope that we can convert them to Smalltown customers. We’re offering a great deal: we’ll keep your current Local2Me ad running for no charge if you purchase a Smalltown enhanced Webcard. Please contact Dan Payomo dan@smalltown.com , VP Sales, if you would like more information about this opportunity. Advertising on Smalltown is extremely targeted and affordable. Can I use Local2Me and Smalltown at the same time? Absolutely. By all means continue to use Local2Me as you always have. But when you have a spare moment, check out one of the Smalltown sites below and sign up for our Daily Digest.
